"Free" means several different things in this category, and the difference matters more than the headline. Some tools let you generate and download a finished image. Others generate a watermarked preview and charge to remove it. A third group offers no free generation at all — only a sample gallery.
What each free tier actually gives you
| Tool | Free generation | Watermark | Download |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixshop | 3 credits, no card | None | Full resolution |
| Aragon AI | Sample gallery only | n/a | Paid only |
| HeadshotPro | Sample gallery only | n/a | Paid only |
| Remini | Limited daily edits | On free tier | Paid to remove |
| Canva | Generous free tier | None | Yes, general editing |
The watermark question
A watermarked preview tells you whether the framing and lighting worked. It does not tell you whether the output holds up at full resolution — and resolution is where AI headshots most often fall apart, with soft eyes and mushy hair that only appear when you zoom in.
If you are evaluating tools, prioritise ones that let you see a real full-resolution file. That is the thing you would actually be paying for.
Free is a trial, not a plan
Every free tier here is designed to prove the output before you pay, and that is a reasonable use of it. If you need one photo for one purpose, a free tier may genuinely be enough. If you need a set of varied looks, or you will need updated photos as your role changes, budget for a paid run.
